Course Description: In this course, students will write the standard five-paragraph essay including an introduction, thesis statement, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Choosing from a variety of topics, students will write different types of essays such as comparison and contrast, expository, descriptive, persuasive, and a research essay. Students will be required to complete and/or edit papers at home. Papers will be shared with the instructor via Google Classroom and Google Docs prior to class time. Students will be expected to use proper grammar, punctuation, and assigned vocabulary. Vocabulary assignments will be given each week and quizzes on the vocabulary will be given in class. Students must have access at home to a computer/laptop/iPad and the internet for this class. Students are required to bring a laptop/iPad to class. Google Classroom will be used by the instructor for accessing assignments and posting grades. Students will be encouraged to do their best and develop the skills and talent that God has given them in the area of academic writing.

Homework Level: In semester homework is 2-2 ½ hours per week.

Tuition and Fees:

Registration Fee: $25 nonrefundable payable to Beth Moore

Tuition: $185 per semester payable to Beth Moore

Faculty Fee: The annual administrative fee for this class is $30 per student, not to exceed $180 per family. This fee is payable to Grace Presbyterian Church, PCA, on the first day of class.

Instructor: Mrs. Beth Moore. Mrs. Moore holds a B.A. in English from Samford University with a minor in History. She has an M.A. in English from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She has seven years of teaching experience at Pelham High School where she taught General English, Advanced English, and AP Prep English classes. After completing her master’s degree, she taught Composition 101 - level courses at UAB and Composition 101- and 102- level courses at Jefferson State Community College (Shelby Campus) until the arrival of her first child. She has taught at Chelsea Tutorials for the past eight years. She is married and has four children. She is an active member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Mrs. Moore addresses subject matter from a biblical world view.
