Course Description: In this course, students will learn to research and write argumentatively. They will study different styles of argument such as Persuasive, Classic, Toulmin Method, and the Rogerian Argument. Students will study different types of fallacies and work to continue to improve their research and documentation skills. Students will discover how to use credible sources in research. Topics discussed will be current events covering political, ethical, and social issues. Weekly writing assignments will be required with several essays written each semester. A research paper on a contemporary topic will be required including notecards, an outline, and a paper. A year-long research project with several steps will be assigned on a topic of the student’s interests. This paper will require outside reading, research, annotated bibliography, and a project. The material chosen for this class deals with mature themes that will be discussed in the classroom from a Biblical Worldview.
Prerequisite: Students must have a basic knowledge of essay writing to enroll in this class. Students must possess basic MLA research skills. BEFORE THE STUDENT'S ENROLLMENT IS APPROVED, AN ESSAY ON AN ASSIGNED TOPIC MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE INSTRUCTOR.
Homework Level: In semester homework is 3-4 hours per week

Faculty Fee: The annual administrative fee for this class is $30 per student, not to exceed $180 per family. This fee is payable to Grace Presbyterian Church, PCA, on the first day of class.
Instructor: Mrs. Beth Moore. Mrs. Moore holds a B.A. in English from Samford University with a minor in History. She has an M.A. in English from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She has seven years of teaching experience at Pelham High School where she taught General English, Advanced English, and AP Prep English classes. After completing her master’s degree, she taught Composition 101 - level courses at UAB and Composition 101- and 102- level courses at Jefferson State Community College (Shelby Campus) until the arrival of her first child. She has taught at Chelsea Tutorials for the past eight years. She is married and has four children. She is an active member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church.
