Advanced Writing & Southern Literature

 Course Description: The South has a rich literary history, and the theme for this course is “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” In this course, students will study classic Southern literature with mature themes. racism, treatment of women, and abuse are just a few concepts that permeate Southern literature and will be discussed in the classroom from the perspective of the author, time period, and draw the students back to the Biblical Worldview of the subject. Paragraphs, essays, and research papers will be written on the assigned readings. Outside reading, writing, research, and sharing of papers will be required each week. Students will be required to conduct a year-long study of a Southern theme/author and write a well-researched thesis (8-10 pages) on their chosen topic (due second semester). Students must have access at home to a computer/laptop/iPad and the internet for this class. Students are required to bring a laptop/iPad to class. Grades and assignments will be shared through Google Classroom. Students will be encouraged to do their best and develop the skills and talent that God has given them in the area of academic writing.

Prerequisite: Students must have a basic knowledge of essay writing to enroll in this class. Students must possess basic MLA research skills. BEFORE THE STUDENT'S ENROLLMENT IS APPROVED, AN ESSAY ON AN ASSIGNED TOPIC MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE INSTRUCTOR.

Homework Level: In semester homework is 3-4 hours per week

Class Size: If a class minimum of 5 students is not reached, class may be cancelled. A maximum of 12 students will be accepted.

Tuition and Fees:

Administrative Fee: $50 per student enrolled in the program, due at the time of registration, refundable through 6/30/22, payable to Grace Presbyterian Church, PCA.

Registration Fee: $25 nonrefundable payable to Beth Moore

Tuition: $250 per semester payable to Beth Moore

Faculty Fee: The annual administrative fee for this class is $30 per student, not to exceed $180 per family. This fee is payable to Grace Presbyterian Church, PCA, on the first day of class.

Instructor: Mrs. Beth Moore. Mrs. Moore holds a B.A. in English from Samford University with a minor in history. She has an M.A. in English from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She has seven years of teaching experience at Pelham High School where she taught General English, Advanced English, and AP Prep English classes. After leaving there, she taught Composition 101 - level courses at UAB and Composition 101- and 102- level courses at Jefferson State Community College (Shelby Campus) until the arrival of her first child. She has taught at Chelsea Tutorials for the past ten years. She is married and has four boys. She is a member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Mrs. Moore addresses subject matter from a biblical world view.
